MODEST NEEDS GRANTS:
In keeping with its mission, Modest Needs offers the following types of grants
Modest Needs makes Self-Sufficiency Grants by remitting payment to a creditor for an expense on behalf of an otherwise self-sufficient individual or family for a relatively small, emergency expense which the individual or family could not have anticipated or prepared for.
In making a Self-Sufficiency Grant, our goal is to prevent an otherwise self-sufficient individual or family from entering the cycle of poverty as a result of the financial burden posed by a relatively small emergency expense.
For example, we might make a Self-Sufficiency Grant to cover the cost of an emergency auto repair that must be made if an individual is to continue working.
Modest Needs makes Back-to-Work grants by remitting payment for a small work-related fee or expense on behalf of a temporarily unemployed individual.
In making a Back-to-Work grant, our goal is to provide a willing but temporarily unemployed individual with the means to return to work.
For example, we might make a Back to Work grant to cover the cost of a professional license renewal for a temporarily displaced worker.
- Independent Living Grants
Modest Needs makes Independent Living Grants by remitting payment to a creditor for an expense on behalf of persons who are permanently unable to work but who nevertheless are living independently on the limited income to which they are entitled - their retirement income, or their permanent disability income, for example.
In making an Independent Living Grant, our goal is to empower financially responsible persons who cannot work to continue to live independently on their limited incomes, despite an unexpected expense which no conventional agency is prepared to address.
For example, we might make an Independent Living Grant to cover the cost of maintenance on a piece of accessibility equipment not covered by Medicaid, to cover an unexpectedly large prescription medication co-pay, or to assist with a large summer cooling bill.

You should apply for a Bridge Grant if:You are currently unemployed and need help to afford a small, emergency expense that is essential to your ability to look for / accept new employment and /or to remain self-sufficient while waiting for your unemployment benefits to start.
For example, a person who received a layoff letter recently due to the economic downturn and cannot afford to pay rent while waiting for unemployment benefits to kick in would be an excellent candidate for a Bridge grant.

Unfortunately, many people worldwide have to make decisions daily in order to survive. The Individual Development Account (IDA) Program empowers low-income families to build long-term productive assets through matched savings accounts. The participant’s accumulated funds may be used to purchase a home, or start a business, or to continue higher education or vocational training.

Low-income - Child Care Assistance Grants:
State child care assistance programs are funded through the Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF). CCDF is a Federal program that assists low-income families, families receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), and those transitioning from TANF in getting child care so they can work or attend training/education. Each State has its own eligibility guidelines. You may apply for child care assistance (sometimes called a “subsidy” or “voucher”) at a State or local agency. You may receive assistance if you show that the following is true:
• You need child care to work, attend school, or receive training;
• Your income is not greater than the income limit set by your State;
• Your child is younger than 13 years; and/or
• Your child has a special need or is under court supervision and is younger than 19 years.

Disabled Persons- seeking employment Grants:
Providing grants to support job-seekers with disabilities in securing the tools they need to secure competitive employment. Transportation, wardrobe, and adaptive technology costs can sometimes stand in the way of a person realizing an opportunity that they are qualified to accept. The Foundation seeks to provide resources to help eliminate these obstacles so that qualified people can succeed in employment

Crime Victim's Compensation:
To qualify for compensation, victims must meet certain requirements.
While every state operates under its own law, the requirements are broadly similar. Victims must:
- Report the crime promptly
- Cooperate with law enforcement
- File a timely application
- Be innocent of wrongdoing
- Have an expense or loss not covered by insurance or another public benefit program, like the V.A., CHAMPUS, Medicaid, and other federal programs.

Refugees:
NJ's Refugee Resettlement Program (RRP)
NJ's RRP is a federally funded program that provides cash and medical assistance to refugees. An individual is considered a refugee for purposes of RRP if he or she fled from and cannot return to his or her place of national origin because of fear of persecution on account of race, religion or political opinion.
Only single individuals or couples without children are eligible for the RRP program, which is administered by the county welfare agencies for up to eight months, based on the refugee's date of entry into this country. All other refugees, if otherwise eligible, can receive assistance under the WFNJ program.

Compassion Fund - Note** Although several counties are still listed on the web link, the following 2 grants are restricted to Bergen County, NJ residents only.
The Compassion Fund assists individuals, families, and children in crisis by providing funds directly to those in need or to agencies working on their behalf.
This initiative has helped many North Jersey citizens including:
- Covering housing expenses for two separate single mothers whose residences were destroyed by fires.
- Helping a single mother keep her home by paying a tax lien that was put on her home due to not receiving child support.
